Artist Statement
My artwork blends the Alaskan landscape with Athabascan mythological characters and elements. Inspired by historical accounts, anthropologists, oral records, and writings of authors like Lynn Schooler and Richard K. Nelson, my work is inspired by a forgotten world of supernatural elements that features historical characters and mythological elements interacting with the Alaskan landscape. I draw upon my experience and use compositional elements from my solo sojourns in landscape photography to imbue my work with the immense feeling of solitude and vulnerability imparted by being alone in the wilds after dark. I use small marks to create works full of details, and color themes that convey feelings ranging from unsettling to awe depending on the characters and scenes. I make this art because I believe that we are the products of those that came before us, and I am fascinated by them. I believe that shared emotional experiences are a bridge between us and our ancestors.
