There’s permafrost and plants here that are usually found above the Arctic Circle. A nearby pamphlet explains why: every 1,000 feet of elevation gain is the equivalent to traveling 600 miles north. And at the edge of this tree line in the Colorado Rockies stands another wonder, the vanguard of the forest below, the bristle-cone pine. Though this grove isn’t as old as the one in California that holds Methuselah, the tree that’s been living since 2833 BC, these ones are still ancient. On the day prior, the gulf was whipped white by the wind and I hadn’t seen it pushed around so furiously like that before. I think it’s because the ground absorbs so much water that when it storms the place would be full of corpse tea if they were buried underground. Metairie is a southern who’s-who of lore and history. The sprawling necropolis counts as residents a prominent brothel madame of the French colonial period, Louisiana governors and senators, and Confederate generals. In the corner is a memorial to the Louisiana Division of the Confederate Tennessee Army that contains the remains of the very man that initiated the Civil War, P.G.T. A step this direction and two new species of trees appear, a step this way and three more. There must be a dozen within the first stand of old growth I encountered, which prompted me to do some Googling and read that there are over 73,000 species of tree species in the world. But it’s not enough to have a couple dozen different kinds in the mix, because even individual stands are in different seasons. I think their inherent creepiness stems from the fact they’re so unrelateable. With curling antennae and thumping wings and chitinous armor for skin they are alien to us and the subject of horror flicks because of it. Maybe the disconcerting aspect is the emotional dissonance. These curious moths match the hummingbird in size and flight pattern, and hover over flowers and slide their tongue down into their pistols to lap up nectar. One really, really strange thought kept occurring to me as I jumped around trying to photograph them - they look juicy. It’s been a very long time since I’ve felt the urge to eat a bug, but these are absolutely giant and I’m sure they’re full of sweet nectar. I wouldn’t expect Ben & Jerry’s exactly, but they’ve gotta be gushing with sugar. I’m sure birds think the same thing, which is why these moths only emerge from their roosts around dusk and hence the high ISO setting to compensate for the low light, which creates extra grain in the image. The Burning of Zozobra comes to mind, which is the marquee event where an enormous marionette effigy who represents gloom is burned. Or, perhaps it was the cabaret where flamenco performers danced passionately to the staccato of Spanish guitar, stomping the wooden floor when the songs climaxed and the other clapped in rhythm with the singer. Or perhaps it was walking the halls of the Institute of American Indian Arts and peeking into the classrooms, where many of the best and brightest students from all nations - Athabaskan, Tlingit, Crow and others, were sitting in front of easels or listening to lectures or sculpting. For years I’ve wanted to study here… do you think they’d say anything if I just took a seat next to them? But what is most striking to me is how each and every one without fail says hello as we pass by. And they weren’t friendly just at IAIA, but the whole town was like that and no place more so than the grungy Matador, where one swinger found me in the red room and had me feel her tits and gave me her tongue. Wearing a suit in that basement I got to be somebody. It didn’t bother me that her husband was sitting across the room from us and she waved at him after we made out, but what was bad etiquette was letting my date sit alone, so we made our way to the dance floor. The 6ft blonde gringo girl stood out like a llama in a dachshund rodeo, but no one paid us any attention. It was inconspicuous bliss amid the Latino dance music, and that is the nature of this place. My dinner date was a fishing boat captain from Alaska and she told me all about the boats in the marina, what they were good for, and how they handled. I’m quite pleased with myself too, for reciprocity is the key to every relationship and I was able to school her on camera settings. She only had a cell phone, but when I started in photography years ago it was on a cell phone too, and the settings on a camera phone’s pro mode are the same used in a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Maybe my favorite of the them are the sea squirrels that bob up and down upon tides as the ocean laps the island. One of them was clam-crazy and mowing down on what to have been an ocean’s worth of them. And on the subject of death, the “Titanic of Alaska”, the Princess Sophia, had grounded herself on a reef just a bit north up the channel from here. For 40 harrowing hours she teetered in gale-force winds beyond the reach of rescue boats, until the rising tide forced her from safety and dragged 353 souls down with her. It’s a horror story that no one seems to know about since news of its sinking was overshadowed by the end of WW1 and Spanish Influenza epidemic. But in the countless bays and channels along Alaska’s coasts there’s probably a horror story for each one. The sweeping tides and islands that funnel winds are treacherous, and any seaman probably has a dozen horror stories they can tell you. Safe on dry land, I drove south to a tiny collection of houses that makes up the town of Douglas. Picturesque in itself but not as much for a natural landscape guy, I continued south down the Glacier Highway and along the Gastineau Channel. I pulled off on the side of the road to take a few shots of the water while a bald eagle cried out overhead from its evergreen nest. It's calls echoed across the channel. From there I continued to the end of the road and then turned around and hit up the Rain Forest Trail, where I made a short hike out to the beach and set up the tripod to take a few long exposures. I've never done long exposures of water, and the little waves lapping gently at the bay came out great on the Canon's LCD screen. It was so strange - there was a constant barrage of light flashing across the sky yet never any thunder. The next morning I woke up outside the White River visitor center on the rez. I ended up heading up towards Nederland and stopped at Golden Gate Canyon State Park, and picked up an annual state park pass for $120. I can't wait to see all of these parks finally, especially Roxborough. I drove around the park a bit but didn't find much photo-worthy from the side of the road at the middle of the day, save for a little red barn with a snowed-in courtyard area. Spent the rest of the day at the ghost town north of Nederland, where the Nissan got stuck on an icy part of the road and I had to dig it out with rocks. I noticed that half of my tread was missing when I was under the car, and it made me nervous about getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It’s -45F and I had to keep the camera battery in my jacket next to my body to keep it warm so it doesn’t freeze. And any time I come in from the field I have to put the Canon in an airtight sandwich bag as it acclimatizes over a 115F temperature change. The last thing a photographer wants is condensation forming inside their camera. And worst of all are the trips going out into the field for nothing! One night I got up at 4AM and went out to Poker Flats for a vivid aurora the geophysical institute predicted. I waited alone in the dark and cold but turned in after 30. I got back to the hotel an hour later without having taken a single picture. The country looks like its straight out of the pages of a vacation brochure again. With warmth restored, we gathered our things and talked to the bnb owner on our way out, who explained that a cow had stomped on the power line last night. Suddenly I’m in the mood for a burger. We took off in the rental car over country roads and through tropical jungle, occasionally punctuated by small villages where the sound of cheering football fans and scent of wood fires emerged from each. And everywhere the air is heavy with the fragrance of tropical flowers. The roads feel Alaskan, as does the traffic over them. There are so many pot holes here that it's like a video game trying to avoid them, and most of the vehicles here are either 4WD or old cars. My frugal ‘96 Nissan 200sx would fit in here since many of the cars are Sentras, the 4-door variant. My car’s generation must have died out in Colorado 15 years ago, but here it seems like every 4th car is one of the old Nissans. We’ve been rolling an absolute gem of a rental car ourselves: an early-2000’s Daihatsu 4x4 with 160,000 miles on it. There is so much life in one place, and walking along the pathways under dense choking tree canopy reminds one how insignificant they are. Just hiking them feels like the Forest Temple from Ocarina of Time (I’ll lose a couple of you with that reference but it’s an accurate description). After leaving the hauntingly empty massive hotel the next day we found a nearby hot springs where a hilarious Indian (the other kind - dot, not feather) guy got into our pool with his family. He told them it was a private pool that I had warmed for them and that he had paid me for access. Hah! Fucking guy, I love him. Climbing the steps to the shrine in the dense fog was a surreal experience. Being a 2nd-tier city, there aren’t as many foreigners around and the locals took note of our presence. The top of the stairs led to a shrine that was much akin to the Lincoln Memorial and had a solitary figure seated and overlooking the hillsides below. We live in a world run rampant with hyper-consumerism where we’re continually being sold something. Mix that with social media where we're constantly comparing ourselves to others and worry about how many likes we'll get, etc. Collectively we need to take a step back from all that. All I want to do want is to share this world with you. Each of us belongs to this world, and it is my desire that sharing pieces of it with you might influence you to explore it and be kind to it.
